San Francisco e-bike notes
San Francisco uses California’s class definitions plus SFMTA and Recreation & Parks rules on crowded streets, park roads, and shared paths. Throttle bikes and Class 3 get the most local limits.

- Helmets
- Class 3 riders must wear a helmet statewide. Minors have additional bicycle helmet requirements. On SF’s steep, mixed-traffic streets, a helmet is the default for every class.
- Where you can ride
- Bike lanes and streets are the normal place to ride. Golden Gate Park, the Embarcadero, and waterfront paths may restrict Class 3 or throttle operation. Neighboring agencies (Marin, Golden Gate National Recreation Area) set their own e-bike policies on trails just outside the city.
- Sidewalks
- Sidewalk riding is generally prohibited. Walk the bike on crowded sidewalks and in transit plazas.
- Extra local rules
- SFMTA can regulate where powered devices may operate, and park signs are controlling. Night lights, yielding to pedestrians, and local slow-zones matter as much as the class label on your bike.
