Know Where You Can Ride Your eBike — Before You Ride
Simple, fast answers for every U.S. state: classes, speed limits, helmets, and trail access.

Why checking rules matters
Legal risk
Assumptions about "it's just a bike" can mean tickets or hassle where enforcement is strict.
Safety risk
Helmet requirements, speed expectations, and mixing with cars change by place — knowing the pattern reduces surprises.
Access risk
Trails and paths often have class or motor rules. Riding the wrong setup can put path access at risk for everyone.
When riders share clear information and safety habits, it's easier to earn better infrastructure and fair policies. eBike Law Hub is built to grow with the community — from education today to organization tomorrow.
What eBike Law Hub offers
We turn long statutes into short, rider-friendly summaries — so you know what to check before you head out.
- What you get — For each state: e-bike classes, helmet rules, age limits, and where you can usually ride (roads, paths, trails — with notes on local exceptions).
- Who it's for — Daily riders, families, and anyone who sells or fixes e-bikes and needs a clear starting point.
- Important — Cities, counties, and trail managers often add stricter rules. Use this hub to know what to verify, not as the final word.
How we build summaries
How we source this: Summaries are based on publicly available state laws and the common three-class framework many states use. We aim for accuracy and link to official resources where we can — always double-check before you rely on a rule on the road or trail.

E-bike classes in simple terms
Most states reference three classes. Speed limits below refer to motor assistance, not how fast you can coast downhill.
Class 1
Pedal-assist · up to 20 mph
Motor helps only when you pedal — no throttle. Often the easiest class on shared paths; always check local signs.
Class 2
Throttle · up to 20 mph
Throttle works without pedaling; assist usually stops at 20 mph. Some trails restrict throttles.
Class 3
Faster pedal-assist · up to 28 mph
Faster assist for roads and bike lanes. Stricter helmet and age rules are common; often banned on some multi-use paths.
Details vary by state. See the full class guide for a comparison table.
